NEWTOWN — William H. English, 73, 213 South Miller St., Newtown, died unexpectedly at 4 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27, 2006 at his residence. He was born May 21, 1933 in Franklin, Tenn., the son of Claibourne and Deborah (Core) English. He married Kermita “Kay” Thompson July 1, 1960 in Gary. She survives. He was a graduate of Battleground Academy in Franklin and received his bachelor of science in education from the former Tennessee Poly Tech Institute and his masters in education from Indiana University. He had also received 60 hours toward his superintendent's certification, mostly sponsored by a Lily grant. He had been a resident of Newtown since 1995, moving from Portage following his retirement. He was a veteran of the Navy, having served with the Seabees from 1953-1955. He retired after 31 years as a fifth and sixth grade teacher from Riley Elementary School, Portage, in 1990. He was active in the Portage Lions Club and had served as an officer, both locally and district levels, the PTA, had served on the Portage Township School board, formerly a member of the Portage United Methodist Church, was master of ceremonies of talent shows in Tucson, Ariz. where he and his wife had wintered for many years. He was a member of the Newtown Community Church. He enjoyed antiques, auctions and flea markets. Survivors, besides the wife, include: a son, Jonathon (Kristin) English, Portage; three daughters, Sarah (John) Lilley, Dousman, Wis., Janet (Robert) Redmond, Indianapolis, and Rebecca (Derek) Sullivan, Whiteland; eight grandchildren, Craig, Claire, Faith and Marc Lilley, Kayla, Rachel and Jonathon Sullivan, and Andrew English; a brother, Blythe “Core” English, Lake Wales, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Avis Martin, Greencastle; three nephews; and two nieces. Friends may call from 5:30-7:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) in Family & Friends Funeral Home, Wingate. A memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Mike Parks officiating.
